A look at 2024 and the Sport so far by the numbers

I hope to occasionally post some useful “overall” data.  This is a start, looking at things from 2017-2024.

The number of Scent Work trials recorded each year
As defined by the AKC, so not “Weekends” or “Days”

Number of individual runs per year
The AKC reports “Entries” per trial but “Starters” per class. The relationship between “Entries” and “Starters” isn’t always clear; you would think Entries would always be greater than Starters and would include any absent dogs, but sometimes it is fewer. But if “Starters” is less than “Qualifiers” for a class, we set “Starters” to equal “Qualifiers” so we think it’s a better count.
Number of dogs in the sport
The Green line is intended to give an idea of attrition, how many dogs had a Q ‘last year’ but not this year. The Blue line is intended to show entries into the sport. And Yellow includes both of those and shows the number of different dogs that got at least one Q during the year. (Since NQs are not reported in results, we don’t know anything about dogs that never receive a Q)

Largest Classes (All Years)

Gosh, how about the West Coast, eh?
