However, at this point in time, there are rules that have not been added to the official Rulebook and I wanted a spot to link everything that I *know* the AKC has given us in the way of guidance. The results of this program are not published anywhere, one of the reasons we don\u2019t include it in the We Smell Better database.<\/li>\r\n<!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/ul>\r\n<!-- \/wp:list -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p><strong>Information that has been provided through social media:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:list -->\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><!-- wp:list-item -->\r\n<li><strong>How long can you continue to compete in Novice A after earning an element title?<\/strong> The Rules just say that the Novice A class is only open to dogs that have not yet earned an element title.\u00a0 If handlers do not make the lateral move to Novice B soon enough, the handler and Trial Officials will receive a letter saying that one or more Qualifying scores out of Novice A were disallowed.\u00a0 But what is \u201csoon enough?\u201d\u00a0 Judge Dino Candelaria asked AKC Scent Work and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/AKCScentWork\/posts\/3771236779780073\/\">shared their email response in a May 10, 2024, comment<\/a> in the Friends of AKC Scent Work Facebook Group:<br \/>\r\n<p><em>&#8220;Thank you for reaching out to the Scent Work Department with your question about Novice A move ups to Novice B.\u00a0 We take the leg if the title was earned before close of entries on the next trial.\u00a0 I hope that helps.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><em>Sincerely, Judith Powell&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>Note that \u201ctake the leg\u201d means \u201ctake the Q AWAY,\u201d that is, the Q is disallowed.\u00a0 In other words, if your next trial is still open at the time you earn the element title from Novice A, you should contact the trial Secretary to move into Novice B.\u00a0\u00a0 If your next trial has already closed, you may stay in Novice A for that trial and any Qs will still count toward Elite.\u00a0 <br \/><br \/>Based on our calculations, it appears that if a trial has Day of Show entries, this policy is not enforced, which is very reasonable on the part of the AKC.\u00a0<\/p>\r\nEveryone agrees that making the lateral move as soon as possible is the best advice, and we acknowledge that simply always entering Novice B in the first place is also a fine choice.\u00a0 Nonetheless, it\u2019s important to know exactly what the rule is if one is expected to follow it.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:list -->\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><!-- wp:list-item -->\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AKCScentWork\/posts\/pfbid02cX3XJxDjvff6vRYHWEDTZd14E5W7F6NUxvqVWgU82ePXRdqp89Ecp5UJMEHCHkqMl\"><strong>Assurance that all Qs will count toward Numeric Elite Level titles\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>(April 18, 2024, <del>actual implementation is pending programming changes<\/del>, this was implemented on August 15, 2025 and replacement certificates were sent to those affected.\u00a0 No change has been made to the Regulations, so this apparently was an interpretation issue).\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AKCScentWork\/posts\/pfbid0XDWVNE9TEQaXJ5Kq7TPEWG3tDK9HeiowRnMVTfRFjtFSsjs16vZXhe3C6cPWvvADl\"><strong>Collars Allowed in AKC Scent Work<\/strong><\/a> (April 12, 2024)\u00a0 \u00a0(This is a clarifying post by the AKC that did not change the rules in any way)<\/li>\r\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\r\n<li><del><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AKCScentWork\/posts\/pfbid0Nz9m8NCZL4H98JKE8S5K8shGgiz8fT19jM2GhW3jY1SsNSX88XCLhxNwMaMjkWCql\"><strong>Dyed or artificially colored dogs allowed in AKC Scent Work<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0( Feb 26, 2023) Initially, coloring was specifically prohibited in Scent Work;
